Jake Freitag Paces
Blue Devil JV Baseball

Freshman shortstop Jake Freitag paced the Huntington High School junior varsity baseball team this past spring, compiling a .385 batting average with six extra base hits. He even won two games on the mound.

The 20-member Blue Devil squad finished the campaign with a 5-13 mark under head coach Keith Barrett. The highlight of the season came against talented Hauppauge, who had lost just a handful of games prior to meeting Huntington. “We won on a hit by Justin Fleiss with a runner on third base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh of a tied game,” Barrett said about the 10-9 victory.

Freitag was splendid all year, banging out four doubles and two triples and knocking in six runs. Barrett called him the “most talented player on the team. [He] does everything well. He can hit, field, pitch and run the bases very well.”

Sophomore Joey Dillhoff also shined, batting .370 with a pair of homeruns and 11 RBIs. He’s “very fast and athletic, a good hitter and has a very strong arm; a great competitor,” Barrett said.

Jack McCarty, a stand-out eighth grade catcher/pitcher showed why he was elevated from the Finley Middle School program a year early. He hurled Huntington to a pair of victories and hit .419 with five doubles and nine RBIs. Barrett called McCarty the “most knowledgeable player on the team [with] great ability for his age; A real student of the game.”

Although the 2010 Blue Devil JV compiled the same amount of wins as the 2009 edition did, “this year’s team was a lot more competitive than last year’s,” Barrett said. “We lost six games by two runs or less. Last year’s team was blown-out in every game we lost. This year’s team showed major improvement throughout the course of the season.”

What does 2011 look like? “It’s hard to forecast because I don’t know the kids on the Finley team,” Barrett said. “Hopefully, the freshman will improve and some talented players from Finley will add to the freshmen coming back to make year a successful season.”

Extra Bases: Freshman Justin Fleiss collected 14 hits, scored 10runs and batted .341 . . . Sophomore Dan Cohn batted .324 . . . Dillhoff led the team with 20 hits, 18 runs scored and seven stolen bases . . . McCarty struck-out only once in 52 plate appearances.
