Blood Drive Seeks out Staff and Community

With an almost dire need for blood and blood products this time of year, the Huntington School District plans to do its part on January 22 when it holds its annual blood drive at Woodhull Intermediate School from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Staff members and community residents are encouraged to participate.

The drive is listed on the district’s calendar for January 29, but it has been moved up a week. Its timing is crucial according to Vicki Mingin, Huntington’s executive director of special education and student support services, who is helping to coordinate the event with Woodhull School nurse Martha Ironman.

Long Island Blood Services is staffing the drive, which extended its hours far beyond the end of the normal school day in the hope of giving dozens of additional opportunities to those willing to donate.

“Having sufficient blood supply available can only happen with continued blood drives such as the one our district is holding,” Dr. Mingin said. Organizers said that many people don’t realize one pint of blood can assist up to six other individuals in need.

“By giving blood, you are doing something that will help other people, and at the same time feel good about yourself,” Dr. Mingin said. Visit www.nybloodcenter.org for more information. A person can donate blood every 56 days or up to six times per year.

Those donating blood must bring a photo ID along with their Social Security number. To schedule a specific appointment time call Mrs. Ironman at 673-2030. Specific appointments help eliminate long waits.

Questions regarding medical eligibility for blood donations should be directed to Sue Sandler of Long Island Blood Services at (516) 478-5012 or Mrs. Ironman.
