Blue Devil Fencers Open Strong
The winter season started in fine fashion last weekend as the Huntington High School fencing team won medals at the annual Brentwood holiday tournament. The event attracted more than 260 competitors from 12 Long Island high schools.
In women's epee, senior Olivia Weller won the gold medal and senior Mia Rienzo finished sixth. In men's epee, senior John Ferraiolo took the silver medal and in men's saber, senior Dante Corrocher finished seventh.
Overall, the Blue Devils turned in very strong performances, particularly in epee and saber. Huntington has a talented roster this year and is expected to be highly competitive in league and invitational meets.
Longtime Blue Devil head coach Alan Kuver had much to smile about at Brentwood. In women's epee, in addition to Weller and Rienzo, sophomore Carly Glowacky was 17th and senior Rebecca Deegan finished 21st in a field of 46.
In women's sabre, senior Dylan Tuozzo finished 10th, sophomore Joey Tuozzo came in 20th, sophomore Katia DeSimone was 25th and sophomore Kelly Askerberg finished 26th.
In women's foil, sophomore Maggie Askerberg was 19th, freshman Sibilla Maiarelli was 20th, junior Alexandra Martinolich was 31st and sophomore Brianna Kirkland was 32nd.
In men's epee, in addition to John Ferraiolo, sophomore James Ferraiolo tied for 11th with sophomore teammate Richard Hermer-Fried. Freshman Benjamin Nikodem was 36th.
In men's saber, in addition to Corrocher, sophomore Brent Flippini finished 14th, senior Connor Purcell was 26th and sophomore Scott Garofalo was 39th.
In men's foil, sophomore Joseph Rizzi was 19th, senior Sean Harkins finished 28th, junior Jason Chisholm was 36th and junior Jackson Cohen was 41st.
Kuver's coaching staff is comprised of trusted assistants and Huntington alums Mike Fabio and Valinda O'Garra.
