Huntington School Briefs

The Huntington Foundation's "Reach for the Stars" benefit gala is set for Friday, January 21 from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. at the Woodlands estate in Woodbury. Tickets are now on sale for $125.

The evening will include the presentation of the 2011 Spirit Award to Barbara Cutrone, the Huntington Booster Club's president and a longtime volunteer in the district.

There will be an extravagant cocktail hour and dinner, dancing and silent and live auctions. Vegetarian dinners will be provided to those requesting them in advance. Seating is limited.

Monies raised from the evening will support the Foundation's activities, including the Reach for the Stars grant program that funds teacher innovations. Tickets can be secured by sending a check payable to the Huntington Foundation for Excellence in Education to P.O. Box 552, Huntington, NY 11743.

The Huntington Foundation is seeking items for an auction to be held in conjunction with the dinner. Donations of products, personal services and gift certificates will all be gratefully accepted. Contact Karen Dwyer for more information at (631) 421-4037.

Budget Transfers

Huntington School Board members have approved a series of budget transfers from one account code to another to cover the costs associated with a New York State School Boards Assn. winter law conference on teacher and principal evaluations ($250), calculators for Huntington High School ($13,500), NYSSBA conference/Assn. of School Business Officials workshops ($1,000) and supplies for the high school science research program ($6,000).

Flower Hill Pies Donated

The second graders in Flower Hill School teachers Lisa Baldanza and Suzanne Giuliani's class helped back pies in the run-up to Thanksgiving and then donated the delicious desserts to the Helping Hand Mission in Huntington Station for distribution to hungry families throughout the community.

News from Finley

The J. Taylor Finley Middle School winter concert will be held on Tuesday, December 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Huntington High School auditorium. The public is invited to attend.

A holiday dance for Finley students will be held in the school gym on Friday, December 17 from 7-9 p.m. Tickets will be on sale during regular school hours.

Next School Board Meeting

The next meeting of the Huntington School Board is scheduled for Monday, January 3, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jack Abrams School auditorium. The public is invited to attend.

Donations to District Accepted by Trustees

Huntington School Board members have accepted a pair of generous donations to the district. Trustees took the action at their meeting this past Monday night in the Jack Abrams School auditorium.

KBC Financial Products donated four tables with wheels, two ceiling-mount projector screens, 19 chairs, 18 tables with detachable metal legs, a wood table that is four-feet in diameter with a glass topper, an eight-foot folding table, boxes of staplers, tape dispensers and hole punchers and a box of computer keyboards.

Jean Hegler, a district resident and the treasurer of the Flower Hill School PTA has donated sixteen Pentium 4 computers.

Contracts Approved

Huntington School Board members have approved contracts with Stony Brook University and Marcia E. Jensen, Ph.D. of Seattle, Washington.

Stony Brook University will offer post-graduate level professional development courses for teachers interested in gaining state administrative certification. Teachers will pay $841 per three-credit course. The program consists of nine courses/27 credits. Upon completion of the coursework, participants earn a Post-Master's Advanced Graduate Certificate along with building level and district level state certifications.

Dr. Jensen will provide several days of workshops on cognitive behavioral therapy in the school setting. She will be reimbursed at the rate of $2,000 per day plus expenses.
