Plans for Special Olympics at Huntington HS

There are plans to bring the 40th annual Long Island region Special Olympics Spring Games competition to Huntington High School next April. The games typically feature more than 600 athletes ranging in age from children to adults.

Georgia D. McCarthy, Huntington's district director of physical education, health and interscholastic athletics met recently with representatives of the Special Olympics' Long Island region and said she is "confident that this event will be an extraordinary opportunity for our school district and community."

An exact date for the event has not yet been announced, but it would occur on a Sunday in April 2011. "Our high school students will have the chance to volunteer for these games on various committees," Mrs. McCarthy said. "We have many staff members who are interested in working together to provide a wonderful experience for these athletes."

Last spring, Huntington students Charytin Ortiz, Liam Mrotzek, John Cronin, Nicholas Smyth, and John Manaker won an assortment of medals in various events at the Long Island region Special Olympics, which was hosted by Cold Spring Harbor High School.

"I am really excited about this opportunity," Mrs. McCarthy said. "It's an amazing event."
