Huntington High School senior Patrick White has signed a NCAA letter of intent to attend Division I Hofstra University on a lacrosse scholarship. White transferred to Huntington from Walt Whitman High School where he was an All-County defenseman.
"I am excited to play lacrosse for Hofstra the next four years," Mr. White said. "I am thankful to Coach [Seth] Tierney and the Hofstra staff for acknowledging my potential and helping me through the recruiting process. I can't wait to bond with my new teammates."
Finley Girls are a Powerhouse
The J. Taylor Finley Middle School girls' soccer team rolled to a 7-3 mark on the wings of many strong players. Finley's victories came by scores of 6-1, 6-2, 5-2, 6-0, 8-0, 2-0 and 6-2.
The squad gelled early in the year under veteran coach Linda Roth. The 35-player team was captained by Kathleen Nugent, Mackenzie Maloney, Tyler Burton and Alyssa Amorison. "The captains developed and maintained a cohesive unit throughout the season," Roth said. "They were leaders both on and off the field."
The team's 7-3 record was the mirror opposite of last year's 3-7 mark. "The girls worked well together," Roth said. "This was my most cohesive unit yet."
Huntington utilized a fast-paced style of play along with a rugged defense. Next fall's outlook already looks bright. "With 14 players possibly returning, our prospects for next year are excellent," Roth said.
Mallouk is Fabulous
Sophomore John Mallouk is one of the reasons the Huntington junior varsity football team finished the fall campaign with a 6-2 mark. "He's an outstanding athlete with great leadership abilities," said Ron Wilson, who coaches the Blue Devils along with Todd Jamison. "Truly a coach's dream, John never complains and does what you ask of him."
Mallouk rushed 28 times for 254 yards and caught 13 passes for 146 yards and three touchdowns. He recorded 59 solo tackles, including 11 for a loss, picked up two sacks and three interceptions and recovered a fumble. He earned one game MVP award and was named Defensive Player of the Game five times. He was also the team's punter and averaged 63 yards per kick.
"He's the hardest hitting young man I ever coached at this level," Wilson said. "John is a very quiet, but boy can he make a lot of noise on the field."
Ehrman Looks to Stony Brook
Sarah Ehrman's future is at Stony Brook University after the Huntington senior signed a national letter of intent to play there on a lacrosse scholarship. She's given her heart and soul to the Blue Devils over the past four years.
"Sarah has given back to our lacrosse community by organizing playing opportunities through summer and winter programs," said Nancy Wilson, Huntington's head coach. "Through coach's clinics and booster club activities, Sarah has shared her gifts and talents, which will ultimately have an impact on our program even as she moves forward. I wish her the very best in her future endeavors."
Field General Ben Kocis
Freshman Ben Kocis was quite a field general for the Huntington junior varsity football team. The quarterback completed 52-of-78 passes for 576 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 147 yards. Kocis was voted the game MVP twice and earned offensive player of the game honors once. Coach Todd Jamison referred to Kocis as "Mr. Cool" for his on-field demeanor. "This young man never loses his composure," said Ron Wilson, who coaches the Blue Devils also with Jamison. "He makes great decisions on the field and did a competent job as the top man of the offensive unit."
