Blue Devil Lax in Transition
The Huntington varsity boys' lacrosse team is putting the 2010 season behind it and looking ahead to next spring when it will return a talented cast of players that head coach Paul McDermott hopes to push into the post-season.
The Blue Devils compiled a 6-10 overall record (6-8 in Division II) this past spring. Attackmen Nick Saputo (All-Division, All-County) and Jack Dever, goalie Andrew Sheerin (All-Division) and midfield Ryan Greenhill led the team.
Dever (Rollins College) Sheerin (Washington College), Greenhill (Lynchburg College), Nick Schoen (Haverford College) and Chris McArdle (Washington College) are among the top seniors the team lost to graduation this past June. But, many skilled underclassmen remain.
The 2010 squad lost three close games – one by a single goal and two others by two goals each, respectively, which effectively cost the Blue Devils an appearance in the playoffs. McDermott pointed to an 11-4 victory over Islip at home as the highlight of the season.
Saputo, Jim Roselle and Jack Castelli will return at attack. Will Coffey, Duncan Murchison, Pat O'Brien, Tyre Brown, Dan Plant, Mike Marchetta and Jack Cutrone are coming back at midfield. Calvin Bollar, Peter Kingston, Ryan Mulligan, Conor Reilly, Alex Gennaro and Jack Forster will shore up the defense. John McGrath is set to play goal.
How far Huntington can go next year is anyone's guess at this point. But, the returning players are known as a gritty and competitive group and shouldn't be underestimated.
