Blue Devil Sports News
Eric Mininni (JV girls’ tennis) and Kevin Thorbourne (Finley-8 football assistant) have been appointed to the Blue Devils’ fall coaching staff by the Huntington School Board.
Freshmen Lax Standouts
If the Huntington High School varsity girls’ lacrosse team wins a championship in the near future, you can be assured that incoming sophomores Hannah Burnett and Allison Mehring will have played a key role. The two enjoyed sensational freshmen campaigns.
Burnett notched 12 goals and four assists. Head coach Nancy Wilson said Burnett has “strong development and focus.” Wilson added that Mehring has “great speed” and is “developing her transition game.”
Fall Sports
Huntington High School have a multitude of choices should they decide to participate in the Blue Devil fall sports program. The school will field football, field hockey, girls’ swimming, boys’ golf, girls’ tennis and boys’ and girls’ volleyball, cross country and soccer teams.
In many sports there will be separate junior varsity and varsity teams, increasing playing opportunities. For more information, call the athletic office at 673-2018.
Cheskes Talks Shop
Debra Cheskes is pleased with the direction of the Huntington High School girls’ track and field team. “In what I thought would be a rebuilding year, this young team made great strides,” said Cheskes, who is the Blue Devils’ head coach.
The 2009 s quad set three new school records. Eight team members earned All-League honors and Huntington sent twice as many qualifiers to the county championships as it did in 2008.
Next year looks promising, too. “Alexandra Martinolich and Chloe Brown will return as strong members of the 4x400m relay and the intermediate hurdles,” Cheskes said. “Cristina Badalamenti will once again shine in the long jump and 400m. Celine Takekoshi is the best long distance runner on the team, along with Kerri-Ann Giambruno. Dania Merilan, Hannah Helrich and Jen Polster will return as the outstanding sprinters on the team. Fatimah Gaines, Lidia Aparicio and Monica Rodriquez will be the top throwers.”
Near Perfection
The Blue Devil JV boys’ lacrosse team came close to perfection last spring. Huntington compiled a 14-1 record under a coaching staff that included Anthony Troffa, James Creighton and Dave Wilson.
Huntington’s only loss came in heartbreaking fashion as Comsewogue edged the Blue Devils, 7-6. Huntington recorded victories over Miller Place (12-5), Smithtown East (7-5), John Glenn (16-10), Cold Spring Harbor (9-4), Center Moriches (15-1), Shoreham-Wading River (13-4), Easthampton/Bridgehampton (11-4), Rocky Point (9-8), Islip (16-5), Harborfields (10-7), Sayville (12-11), Bellport (8-2), Deer Park (14-2) and Hauppauge (8-5).
Wright a Factor
Colleen Wright will be a junior on the first day of school. She’s expected to be a Blue Devil lacrosse star for the next two years. Her coach, Nancy Wilson, notes that Wright displays “powerful and explosive defense with strong communication” skills.
Wright’s presence on the field simply cannot be ignored by opponents. She has “excellent stick handling skills and transition play,” Wilson said.
A strong two-way player, Wright is a defensive leader for Huntington, which hopes to make a post-season splash next spring.
He’ll Be Missed
When classes resume next month, Dan Rabinowitz will be missed at Huntington High School. He graduated last June with other members of the Class of 2010 and is headed to SUNY Binghamton to study computer art.
Rabinowitz was a valued member of the Blue Devil tennis team and was well-liked by the coaches who worked with him over the years. A versatile player, the teenager played singles and doubles during his Huntington career.
A fine student, one of Mr. Rabinowitz’s favorite classes was “Bible as Literature” taught by Michael Schwendemann. The reason? Class discussions that actively engaged all students.
