Blue Devil Sports News

Michaela Brown will be attending Salisbury University in Maryland this fall. She sure will be missed around Huntington High School, especially by members of the Blue Devil coaching staff.

Brown is a gifted athlete. She starred on Huntington’s soccer and lacrosse teams and was known for her all-out effort and competitive spirit. She closed out his Blue Devil lacrosse career this past spring by notching 25 goals and eight assists from her attack position. Brown even scooped up four ground balls.

The superb athlete was Huntington’s recipient of the Unsung Hero Award.

Blue Devil Honorees

The Huntington High School boys’ track and field team completed its season with an overall mark of 6-2 under coaches Ron Wilson and Eli Acosta.

Tyriek Johnson earned All-League, All-Division and All-County honors and Chris Sandoval and Eugene Moody were All-League and All-Division. Trayvon Toney, Ryan Ackerman, Tyler Wolfe, Stevenson Gabriel, Dante Allen, Richie Fernandez, Eric Szilagy and Shaheem Lewis were All-League.

Hayes Returns as a Force

It’s with a great deal of anticipation that Emma Hayes-Hurley will return to Huntington High School for her senior year on the Blue Devil soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams. She goes about her business in a quiet, dignified way and is well-like by coaches and teammates.

This past spring Hayes-Hurley grabbed All-Division lacrosse honors when she scored 38 goals and added 17 assists, ten draw controls and seven ground balls from her midfield position.

As a senior, Hayes-Hurley is expected to heavily contribute in each of her three sports and will be a key to whatever success the respective teams achieve.

Remembering “That Throw”

Trayvon Toney is a very good athlete. Ron Wilson can attest to that after being an eyewitness to “That Throw” this past spring. Wilson is the head coach of Huntington High School’s boys’ track and field team and Toney is one of the most valuable Blue Devils.

When Toney threw a personal best 141’6 in the discus event to finish first in the league, Wilson’s jaw dropped. “He’s a great athlete that has unlimited potential,” the coach said. In addition to discus, Toney competed in shot put and the sprints.

James Beck Is MAAC All-Academic

James Beck turned in a remarkable season on the Iona College baseball team. The 2009 Huntington High School graduate recently capped off the campaign with a spot on 2009/10 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic team after compiling a 3.3 grade point average.

Beck is a marketing major at Iona. He led the Gaels with a .341 batting average and collected 44 hits, 23 runs, 34 RBIs, 10 doubles, five homeruns and a .535 slugging percentage. Beck started 32 of the 39 games in which he appeared. Defensively, he was used mainly at catcher and first base.

Forecast for Next Year

Ron Wilson is an optimistic kind of guy. As the program’s head coach, he has high hopes for the Huntington High School boys’ track and field team. “Next year, we should do well,” he said. “Last year was out rebuilding year and those young athletes on our team got the much needed experienced they needed to be successful next year. They are going to have to dedicate themselves a bit more and work a little harder if they are to be league and county champions. They definitely have a cast of characters to do just that.”

Ehrman’s One of the Best

If there was any doubt that Sarah Ehrman is one of the best lacrosse players in Suffolk, the incoming Huntington High School senior erased them this past spring.

Ehrman, who played attack, scored 24 goals and added 25 assists for the Blue Devils. She also scooped up 46 ground balls and took 13 draw controls. The fabulous season was capped off by being named All-Division.

If Huntington makes a run at a championship next spring, Ehrman will be smack in the middle of it.
