Huntington School Board Notes
Huntington School Board members granted child care related leaves of absence to Flower Hill School speech teacher Yafit Lucas (effective Sept. 1 to January 31, 2011) and Jack Abrams School physical education teacher Carrie Postel (effective April 29 to June 30).
Trustees approved retirement requests submitted by district business office employee Joan Sheedy (effective at the close of business July 2) and Huntington High School study hall and hallway assistant Laurel Kane (effective June 30).
Long-term substitute assignments were approved for teachers Kerry Anderson (J. Taylor Finley Middle School – reading), Karen Melara (Jefferson School – dual language), Angela Meringola (Jack Abrams School – physical education), Stephanie Bragman (Huntington High School – social studies) and Jennifer Gulino (Woodhull School – reading).
Budget transfers to cover costs associated with the purchase of paper at Jack Abrams Intermediate School ($500), varsity wrestling team transportation to out-of-town tournaments ($5,675.39) and Huntington High School supplies ($2,000) were also approved.
Trustees also took the following actions:
• Authorized Huntington High School special education teacher aide Kathryn Einhorn to return from a leave of absence, effective April 5.
• Approved stipend changes for Heather Barfus, Suzanne Giuliani and Heather Weinstein related to the mentoring program for new teachers. The stipend will go from $750 to $375. It is funded through a Title IIA grant.
• Accepted the resignation of Washington School teacher aide Janet Olsoe, effective June 30.
• Approved part-time non-instructional appointments for piano accompanists Elizabeth Caserta and Ester Marks. They will be paid $24 per hour when their services are required.
• Appointed Ines Grabe as a three-hour monitor at Jefferson School, effective April 19.
• Approved additional work for Tracy McManus, Veronica Quinlan and Claudia Mingin related to a math workshop presentation for parents. The teachers were authorized to work up to two hours each. They will be paid $48.01 per hour, which is funded through a Title IIA grant.
• Authorized up to 150 hours of AP and Regents review sessions outside of regular classes. Teachers will be paid $48.01 per hour.
• Authorized the addition to the district’s substitute teacher list of Kimberly Belkin, Lauren Curley, Betzabe Levine, Manyellen Rothberg, James Van Eron and Catherine Alexander. They will be paid at the rate of $90 per diem when their services are needed.
• Authorized additional work for Finley Middle School guidance counselor Caterina Cain, who will work in the Finley Middle School Saturday support program for up to 10 hours at $48.01 per hour. The stipend is funded through a state bilingual grant.
• Authorized Vicki Mingin, executive director of special education and student support services, to lead up to six hours of professional development activities. She will be paid $75 per hour.
• Approved the addition of Adrian Jarvis (food service), Shari Harris (clerical), Peggie Primm (clerical) and Debra Smith (teacher aide) to the substitute employee list. Substitute food service workers and aides are paid $8.75 per hour and substitute clerical workers earn $10.50 per hour.
• Approved contracts with the Harborfields and Plainview-Old Bethpage school districts for services provided to special education students.
• Approved the disposal of hundreds of obsolete books.
• Approved a contract with MSG Varsity Network, LLC.
• Approved a contract change order related to the installation of a new fire alarm system at Southdown Primary School. The change amounts to a reduction of $1,265 in the value of the contract, bringing the final amount to $44,548. The reduction represented an unused general electrical allowance in the contract.
• Awarded a bid submitted by Bar Boy Products, Inc. in the amount of $16,917 for two commercial dishwaters for use in the district’s food service program.
• Authorized the addition of Huntington Blue Devils/Hurricane Lacrosse to the list of organizations approved to use district facilities. The group will be using an outside area at J. Taylor Finley Middle for lacrosse practice on Thursday evenings this spring from 5:30-7 p.m.
• Approved the disposal of two Bessler VuLyte II projectors.
