Seahawks Topple Huntington in Thriller, 6-5

Goalie Tom Cox stopped two powerful shots with less than 20 seconds remaining in the game to help the Cold Spring Harbor boys’ lacrosse team topple Huntington, 6-5 before a crowd of more than 1,000 at Blue Devil Stadium last Saturday afternoon.

The exciting game played out on a picture perfect afternoon. After an early burst of scoring, the two teams engaged in a fierce defensive struggle. Cox and Huntington goalie Andrew Sheerin combined for 29 saves in the very physical contest.

Jack Dever scored two goals for Huntington, which also received goals from Tyre Brown, Will Coffey and Duncan Murchison. Nick Saputo contributed three assists. Ryan Greenhill also assisted on a goal.

The Blue Devils led 4-3 at halftime. Cold Spring Harbor tied the game with about three minutes remaining in the third quarter and scored what proved to be the winning goal with 2:02 left on the clock. It was the first time the Seahawks led since seven minutes into the game.

The two goalies made a series of stunning saves, including Sheerin, who stopped several strong shots from close range. Cox’s final two saves with just seconds remaining earned loud applause from the big crowd.

Television cameras were on-site, filming the game for replay later in the week. A play-by-play team was in the press box calling the contest.Although it was a non-league match-up, the afternoon took on a play-off atmosphere.

The Huntington Booster Club’s apparel trailer was parked near the field and the group also sold food and refreshments. Stadium music blared over the public address system and a News 12 camera and reporter were also on the sidelines.

The annual “shootout” between the two schools helps raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. This marked the third straight year since the benefit started that the Seahawks walked away with a victory. Cold Spring Harbor won in 2008, 9-5 and took last year’s game in double overtime, 9-8.

Lax Notes: A large silver trophy is kept by the winning team until the following year’s game at which time it is brought to the sidelines and kept on the scorer’s table during play . . . The handsome trophy will once again be residing in Cold Spring Harbor’s showcase . . . The 2011 game will be hosted by the Seahawks.
