Cheskes is Optimistic on Blue Devils

Debra Cheskes feels good about her team. The head coach of Huntington High School’s women’s track and field team is looking forward to a spring season of personal bests and record-setting performances.

At an early season invitational in Baldwin for freshmen and sophomores, several Blue Devil rookies shined. Dania Merilan ran three rounds of the 100m dash and finished in second place with a personal best time of 12.7 seconds. “Dania is coming off an exceptional winter season and I expect her to continue to be one of the best sprinters in the county,” Cheskes said.

Kerri-Ann Giammbruno finished fourth in the 800m run at the frosh/soph meet with her best time of 2:43.5. Lidia Aparico placed fourth in the shot put with a personal best throw of 24’10½. Jennifer Polster medaled in three separate events, finishing second in the long jump (14’2), fifth in the 100m high hurdles (18.9 seconds) and fifth in the 200m dash (29.1 seconds). “Many other athletes had amazing performances and saw four weeks of training pay off,” Cheskes said.

The Blue Devils will look to upper classmen Lauren Visbal (long jump, triple jump and high jump) and Cristina Badalamenti (400m run and long jump) to sparkle in their events in coming weeks. Jackie Waldron, who transferred back to Huntington last fall and is in her first year on the team, has shown early promise as a thrower. Emma Copp is expected to be very competitive in the 1500m race-walk.

Visbal, Badalamenti, Copp and Aparacio will captain the Blue Devils.
