Blue Devil Lax Alumni Game
Set for May 8
The Huntington High School boys’ lacrosse program will host its annual alumni game on Saturday, May 8 at 1 p.m. on the turf field at Blue Devil Stadium.
The game, which is now in its 27th year, is expected to draw dozens of former players, some of whom will be traveling to Huntington from around the country. Those coming into town on Friday will meet that night for a reunion of sorts at Finnegan’s Restaurant, where they plan to discuss strategy and review last year’s game.
The alumni game is being organized by 1965 Huntington graduate Norman Henry “Hutch” Vander Schuyt, Jr., who earned All-County honors for the Blue Devil lacrosse and football teams. He went on to star on the University of Maryland lacrosse team as a three-time All-American goalie.
Vander Schuyt has asked alums to spread the word about the game. Players are assigned to teams based upon their year of graduation, creating “odd” and “even” squads. Entering this year’s game, the series is tied with each team winning 13 games since the event’s inception.
Alumni are asked to make a $40 donation to play in the game. The funds are plowed back into the Blue Devil lacrosse program to cover items not provided for in the regular athletic budget.
The Huntington Booster Club is collaborating on the game and will provide players with t-shirts and make food and refreshments available. Booster Club members will also be collecting new or gently used sports equipment to help stock its Devils Den, which provides gear to student-athletes in need.
Alumni interested in playing in the game should send a check in the amount of $40 made payable to: Huntington Booster Club, P.O. Box 2294, Huntington, New York 11743. A liability release is also required. It can be downloaded by accessing the Huntington School District’s website at www.hufsd.edu. Click on the School Community link, then the Booster Club tab on the left side of the screen and then select Forms & Files.
