Tyriek Johnson turned in another superb season on the track for the Blue Devils this past winter. The freshman won the league long jump crown with a leap of 21’3 and was the league and sophomore division 55m hurdles champ, crossing the line in a season best 7.86 seconds. He advanced to the county finals in the event.

 

“Johnson can do it all,” said Huntington head coach Ron Wilson, who feels the speedster is one of the best athletes in the school. “He has unlimited potential in everything he undertakes.”

Dever’s Goals Pace Huntington

The Huntington boys’ lacrosse team opened the season with a solid 6-2 victory over Miller Place as Jack Dever notched two goals and two assists and Pat Brady added two goals to pace the Blue Devils.

 

Huntington led at halftime, 3-1 and had its offense in high gear. Miller Place goalie Matt Liantonio kept his team in the game, recording 16 saves. The Blue Devils also received goals from Nick Schoen and Pat O’Brien. Jack Castelli had an assist. Andrew Sheerin made seven saves.

Trustees Approve Request

Huntington School Board members granted a request for the Huntington based American Sports League to use the gym at J. Taylor Finley Middle School for intramural basketball games from April 12 to June 24 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday’s from 7-10 p.m. ASL expects about 50 participants to use the facility.

Five Blue Devils Score

The Huntington girls’ lacrosse team picked up goals from five different players, but the Blue Devils dropped a hard fought game to rugged Rocky Point, 8-5.

 

Huntington trailed at halftime, 5-2, before the two teams played even in the second half. Scoring for Huntington were Michaela Brown, Danielle Catanese, Emma Hayes-Hurley, Emilie Pugliese and Allie Thompson. Karly Kocis stopped eight shots in goal.

New Track Coach

Jennifer Fudens has been appointed assistant coach of the Huntington varsity girls’ track and field team. She will work under head coach Debra Cheskes.

Tough Opening

The Huntington girls’ softball team is still settling in for the spring season. The Blue Devils are looking to get their offense untracked after being tagged for a pair of losses. Half Hollow Hills West topped Huntington on a no-hitter, 10-0 and then Eastport-South Manor beat the Blue Devils, 9-1.

Huntington’s Offense Stopped

The Blue Devil boys’ lacrosse team scored five goals but 15 other shots were stopped in an impressive performance by Smithtown East goalie Bryan Martin, who led his team to a 7-5 victory over Huntington.

 

Jack Dever found the back of the net twice for Huntington. Nick Saputo and Pat Brady each had a goal and an assist, respectively. Ryan Greenhill also scored for the Blue Devils. Andrew Sheerin recorded nine saves in goal.

Ackerman is Impressive

Ryan Ackerman turned in an impressive winter track and field season for the Blue Devils. He was all-league in the 1000m run with a personal best time of 2:49. He also ran on the 4 x 800m relay.

 

Ackerman is looking to continue his development during the spring track season. Head coach Ron Wilson said the sophomore “is an outstanding distance runner. He improved every time he stepped out onto the track. He’s a hard working young man.”
