Blue Devil JV Wins Game of Firsts
Last Saturday's Huntington junior varsity football game at East Hampton was one of "firsts" for many Blue Devil players. Huntington won the contest, 38-14 to improve its record to 6-1 this fall.
Sophomore Tyler Greenhill racked up 155 yards rushing in the first half and then didn't touch the ball at all the second frame. "That's a first this season," said Ron Wilson, who coaches the team along with Todd Jamison.
Sophomore John Mallouk on his first and only carry of the day, on the first play of the second half from the Blue Devil 48-yard line, "broke through the line on a dive play and took it to the house for his first touchdown of the season," Wilson said.
Defensively, Huntington freshman Billy Martin picked up his first interception of the season. Sophomores Pete Hernandez, Mark Curley and Greenhill also recorded interceptions in the game. Freshman Joe Thomas refused to be denied a touchdown when he scooted down the field and returned a kick for 75 yards for his first TD of the season.
Wilson said that one of his players came up to him and said "Coach it must have been the waffles that allowed us to perform well today!" Wilson said he replied, "That's why we eat them before every game."
Nearly four hours on a school bus traveling to-and-from East Hampton was made a little bit easier by members of the Blue Devil football family. "The parents of our athletes are awesome," Wilson said. "They provided us with Gatorade, water and all sorts of snacks for the bus ride home. That was very generous of them."
