Plant's Passing Helps Topple
East Hampton, 38-6

The Huntington football team came out on fire last Saturday before a big homecoming day crowd and rolled to 535 yards of total offense en route to a 38-6 victory over East Hampton.

The Blue Devils utilized aggressive running and passing attacks and a hard-hitting defense to overwhelm the Bonackers and build an insurmountable 24-0 halftime lead. "We wanted to get off to a quick start and that's what we did," head coach Steve Muller said.

Quarterback Dan Plant completed 12-of-17 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns to help Huntington improve to 5-2. Calvin Bollar, the sparkplug of the Blue Devils' offense, scored two touchdowns, ran for 125 yards on 12 carries and had five receptions for 80 yards.

Time-after-time, Huntington's defense repeatedly came up big and gave the offensive unit good field position, which Plant and company were only too happy to exploit. "We moved the ball well," Muller said. Several large gains ignited the crowd, which enjoyed the show.

One of Plant's favorite targets was 5'9 junior Tyre Brown. He caught five passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. Junior Trayvon Toney, who is rapidly becoming one of Suffolk's best all-around players, rushed for 145 yards on 17 carries and starred on defense with 13 tackles and two sacks. He also scored a pair of touchdowns.

"We were quick and aggressive on both sides of the ball," Muller said. "The kids carried out their assignments well. Everything clicked for us."

Placekicker Matt Curley did his part. He was perfect on all five extra-point attempts and also booted a 20-yard filed goal. Dante Allen, a 6'6 senior who is one of the keys to Huntington's season, recorded 11 tackles, including two for a loss. "Dante is just playing great right now," Muller said. "He's pressuring the quarterback and pursuing runners. He's very determined."

Junior Tom Mulligan stopped one of East Hampton's (2-5) best drives when he intercepted a pass near the goal line. "Our defense really cranked it up a few notches," Muller said. "We made things happen."

Third place Huntington hosts first place Islip (7-0) on Saturday (Oct. 30) at Blue Devil Stadium in the regular season finale. Kick-off is set for 1:30 p.m.
