Huntington Makes Strides against Breast Cancer

On a crisp fall afternoon the Huntington High School community circled the track in Blue Devil Stadium to raise funds to fight breast cancer. The energetic group collected nearly $716 and walked away feeling good about making a difference.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Class of 2011 was the official host for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. Senior class faculty advisors Lori Kenny and Eliana Organes and class officers Alexa Giammarino, Rebecca Deegan, Danielle Cerezo, Jonah Kramer, Melissa Cartehena and Jessica Harris helped organize the activies.
Student council officers Ally Kiley, Richie Gray, Olivia Weller, Shayne Larkin and Lauren Corcoran, who are all veterans of previous walks, pitched in to help, too. School nurse Connie DeGrassi also donated considerable time and effort to the event, as she has done in the past for a cause near and dear to her heart.
Dozens of students, teachers and support staff participated in one way or another. Students could be heard discussing how breast cancer has touched the lives of loved ones and the insidious nature of the disease. The event, which is now in its sixth year, raised awareness about breast cancer, the value of regular check-ups and treatments that are currently available.
"The walk would not have been so successful without Miss Yolanda [Carey] who has been a tireless proponent since its beginning, years ago," Mrs. Kenny said. Ms. Carey led the Ready Steppers, the high school step team, in well-received performances.
The Corbly family helped arrange generous donations from Dave & Buster's in Farmingdale, which helped insure the event's financial success. There was an assortment of baked goods on sale along with raffle prizes and just plain fun. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.
The Class of 2011 is passing the torch to the Class of 2015, which will take over hosting duties next fall.
