Zoning Hearings

The Town of Huntington Zoning Board of Appeals will be holding public hearings on requests for variances concerning two pieces of property located in the Huntington school District. The hearings are set for Thursday, November 18 at 6 p.m. in the Town Board meeting room at Huntington Town Hall.

One hearing concerns the property located on the northeast corner of New York Avenue and Fairview Street. The applicant is requesting a special use permit and business depth extension to demolish an existing three-story building and construct a new one-story 3,857 square foot T.D. Bank with a three lane drive thru facility with a vehicular by-pass lane and 23 stall parking lot.

The building that would be demolished once housed the Huntington Hotel during the first half of the last century.

Another hearing concerns the former Town Hall building located on the corner of Main Street and Stewart Avenue. The applicant requests a special use permit and parking variance to convert an existing office building to a hotel and construct a building.

Going to New Orleans

The Habitat for Humanity chapter at Huntington High School has asked the Huntington School Board to approve a field trip for up to 25 students to New Orleans to help in efforts to rebuild areas left devastated by Hurricane Katrina. This will be the group's fifth trip to the southern city.

HFH faculty advisor Robert Gilmor III will supervise students on the trip along with science teacher Craig McKee. Several other adults will also travel with the group.

If trustees approve the trip, the Huntington contingent will leave from LaGuardia Airport on February 19, 2011 and return on February 26. The cost of the trip is estimated to run $800 per student. (The district is not funding the trip.) The club conducts ongoing fundraising to help defray its expenses.

State Band Championship

The Blue Devil marching band has asked the Huntington School Board to approve a trip for 116 students to the New York State Field Band Conference Championship in Syracuse. The group will leave at 12 p.m. on Saturday, October 30 and return at 3 p.m. on Monday, November 1.

The trip will be led by music teachers Brian Stellato, Jason Giachetti and Frank Battista and eight advisors. A group of 25 adults, including chaperones, will travel with the students.

The Blue Devils will rehearse in preparation for their performance and observe and critique the performances of other bands. When they return to Huntington, band members will review a video of their performance and discuss written and taped comments by judges.

The cost of the trip is estimated to run $175 per student. Fundraising opportunities are provided.
