Sarah Casey's Awesome Four Years

Ask her classmates and they will tell you that Huntington High School senior Sarah Casey is a special kind of person. She's smart, funny and athletic. She also has very definite opinions and isn't shy about sharing them. One of them is that she is in the midst of an "awesome" four year stretch.

Ms. Casey believes that the high school experience is one that molds a teenager. "The kid you are when you enter the school is not the same person who leaves," she said. "I've absolutely adored the past four years here and I think the people and students make the experience."

One of the brightest students in the Class of 2010, Ms. Casey is currently doing her due-diligence on a handful of college she is considering attending next fall. The group includes Clemson, Georgia, SUNY College at Purchase, Pace, Penn State and Ohio State. She admits to "basically being all over the place" when it comes to her list of possibilities, but she wants to have plenty of "different places to choose from."

Although she is doing all the background work that picking a college requires, Ms. Casey said she "would love to take a year off and travel around." Who wouldn't? But, she is also realistic and will be ready to begin studying for her undergraduate degree.

Her four years at Huntington High School have been fulfilling ones. "There are so many opportunities for new friends because this school has so many clubs and sports," Ms. Casey said. "I have been on the newscast for two years now as an anchor and also on the varsity field hockey and lacrosse teams. I have made a lot of different friends from doing different types of things and it's awesome to see how much you can learn from people."

The high school newscast is viewed on television screens mounted on hallway walls throughout the building. Ms. Casey works closely with art-video teacher Heather Swan. "I would love to be involved with the arts in a future career and teaching is also an option," Ms. Casey said.

This fall, Ms. Casey is a key player on the Blue Devil varsity field hockey team and also serves as the squad's captain. She is doing her part to help Huntington reach the post-season. She's also a member of the video club and "would love to help expand the club and make the newscasts better," Ms. Casey said.

How has the first two months of her senior year been? "Awesome," Ms. Casey said. "It has a very different feel to it than any of the other years. I feel anxious to get [college] applications done and excited for homecoming, the ski trip, Playfest, Battle of the Classes and graduation! I know this year is going to be great and there is so much more to learn."

Although she's thoroughly enjoyed the past four years, and still has big plans for her remaining months as a senior, Ms. Casey is also happy to be on the verge of moving on with her life. "Going into high school I was nervous and excited to be a teenager," she said. "Now I am so excited to leave Huntington and experience everything new on my own."
