For the third time in four games, the Huntington field hockey team looked awfully impressive, this time shutting out host Walt Whitman, 2-0. Emily Arciprete scored both Blue Devil goals and Colleen Wright contributed an assist. Maggie Lombardo recorded one save in goal. Huntington had 16 shots on goal.
Double Overtime Loss
John Walsh was anything but a happy coach after watching his Huntington girls' soccer team squander 23 shots on goal during a 2-1 double overtime loss to Harborfields.
The teams played a scoreless first half. Harborfields finally broke the stalemate 31 minutes into the second half and Tara Narine responded for the Blue Devils two minutes later.
The Tornadoes won the game on a penalty kick with 1:07 remaining in the second overtime period. Goalie Hannah Burnett recorded 11 saves in the Huntington goal.
Football Game Doctor
Huntington School Board members have appointed Dr. David J. Weissberg to serve as the doctor at football games during the 2010 season. He has provided such services for many years and will be paid $200 per game. His office is located at 175 East Main Street in Huntington.
Dr. Weissberg earned his undergraduate degree in biochemistry in 1976 cum laude and obtained his MD at SUNY Downstate Medical School in Brooklyn in 1980. He completed an internship at Kings County Hospital and a residency at Stony Brook University Hospital in orthopedic medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is affiliated with Huntington Hospital and the Melville Surgery Center.
Dr. Weissberg, who is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, is a member of the State Orthopaedic Society, the Arthroscopy Association of North American and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.
James McCabe Promoted
James McCabe has been appointed to work as the assistant varsity girls' basketball coach at Huntington High School. He had earlier been reappointed as the junior varsity coach, a post he had served in for several seasons. In his place, Jessie Brennan was hired to coach the JV team.
The Blue Devils will have a new head coach this season. Mike Kaplan has been appointed to take over for longtime coach Brad Reminick, who stepped down from the position to become head coach of Huntington's boys' varsity team.
Marquez Scores, but Boys' Soccer Loses
Carlos Marquez scored less than a minute into the second half to tie the game, but the Huntington boys' soccer team went on to lose to host West Babylon, 2-1. The Blue Devils surrendered what proved to be the game winning goal on a penalty kick about seven minutes into the second frame. Huntington goalies E.J. Connell (five) and Norman Vasquez (one) combined to make six saves.
Plenty of Chances
The Huntington field hockey team played a scoreless first half against Northport before drowning beneath three Tiger goals in the second frame of a 3-0 loss. The Blue Devils had their chances, recording eight shots on goal, but couldn't find the net. Maggie Lombardo made 12 saves in goal for Huntington.
Wolfe a Speedster
Tyler Wolfe just keeps getting better and better. Wolfe ran a 17:02 over the challenging course at Sunken Meadow State Park to finish first but the Blue Devil boys' cross country team lost to Hauppauge.
Salese to the Rescue
Kristina Salese scored the game winning goal as the Huntington JV field hockey team shut-out Walt Whitman, 1-0. The Blue Devil offense was paced by Salese, Gillian Ehrman, Kelly Askerberg and Olivia Palmer. The defense was headed up by Sibilla Maiarelli. Goalie Melissa Cohen made four spectacular saves.
Takekoshi Captures First
Celine Takekoshi finished in first place in a time of 21:10 as the Huntington girls' cross country team defeated Islip, 25-30. (In cross country, the team with the lowest score wins.). Takekoshi looked strong throughout the three-mile race at Sunken Meadow State Park.
In a 19-41 Huntington loss to Eastport-South Manor, Takekoshi took second place in 21:07.
Offense Doesn't Ignite
The Huntington field hockey team was soundly beaten by first place Ward Melville, 4-0. The Blue Devils never managed to get their offense going. Maggie Lombardo made three saves in goal.
Great Defensive Play
John Mallouk (five solo tackles, two for a loss), Troy Greene (five solos, three for a loss), Tyler Greenhill (six solos, one for a loss) and Mark Curley (six solos, three for a loss, two sacks and one fumble recovery) enjoyed superb defensive performances last Saturday for the Huntington JV football team. The Blue Devils topped previously undefeated Miller Place, 46-27.
James Byrnes (three solos, two for a loss, one forced fumble), John Cimetta (three solos, one sack) and Y'Majesty Allen (one solo, three pass deflections) also had big games. Sirbashin Watkins was the top special teams' player with two tackles on kicks.
Gerbavsits Scores Winner
It was a cold fall night at Eastport-South Manor High School, but the ride home was a happy one for the Huntington girls' soccer team, which used a late goal by Lauren Gerbavsits to top the Sharks, 2-1.
Emilie Pugliese scored the first goal of the game, but ESM responded at the 25 minute mark of the second half. With less than three remaining, Gerbavsits put Huntington ahead for good when she scored off a corner kick by teammate Cristina Badalamenti.
Blue Devil goalie Hannah Burnett enjoyed one of her best games ever, stopping 11 shots.
Lots of Shots; No Goals
The Huntington girls' soccer team's offense has struggled this season. That was the case against Kings Park. The Blue Devils managed 14 shots on goal, but never did manage to put the ball in the net, losing to the Kingsmen at home, 1-0.
The teams battled to a first half scoreless tie. Kings Park scored what proved to be the game winner midway through the second frame. Angela Bosco made 10 saves in the Blue Devil goal.
