Huntington School Briefs
The Huntington School Board has decided to reject all bids related to a capital project at Woodhull Intermediate School that involves leasing and situating modular classrooms on that campus. Trustees discussed the project during their meeting this past Monday night. District executives were directed to put the put all aspects of the project back out to bid in the hope the bids will come in lower than the ones that were rejected.
Alum Passes Away
Joan Marie Borchert, a member of Huntington High School's Class of 1948 has passed away. A lifelong resident of the town, she was 80.
When Ms. Borchert graduated from Huntington High School it was located on Main Street in the building now used as Huntington Town Hall. She received her diploma during the school's 87th commencement exercises on Tuesday, June 29, 1948 at 8:15 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
The Class of 1948 was led by valedictorian Eva Frances Hofman and salutatorian Susan Abbott Tuttle. Diplomas were presented that day by Superintendent Dr. Lyle L. Morris, Board of Education President Earl W. Chapple and Principal Robert L. Simpson.
Ms. Bochert was a voracious reader, art collector and Broadway show aficionado. She worked for many years as a Linotype machine operator at The Long-Islander newspaper. She was especially devoted to her cats.
Busy Band on Saturday
The Huntington High School marching band was busy last Saturday. The Blue Devils marched down New York Avenue in the first Huntington Awareness Day parade, practicing in the school parking lot, performed at halftime of the varsity football game and took second place in an evening band competition at Walt Whitman High School during which the Blue Devil raised their score by 4.3 points from the previous week.
Race to the Top Funds
The New York State Education Department has announced the Huntington School District's preliminary allocation from the Race to the Top federal grant program amounts to a total of $132,278 spread over four years. New York won a competition against other states for a grant worth up to $696 million.
Finley PTA Meeting
The J. Taylor Finley Middle School PTA will hold a meeting on Wednesday, October 13 at 7:30 p.m. All parents are invited to attend.
Science Honor Society
Huntington High School's National Science Honor Society chapter will induct new members during a ceremony scheduled for Thursday, October 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the School Heritage Museum (room 140). The induction is open to the public.
Finley Pep Rally
J. Taylor Finley Middle School will hold its fall pep rally on Friday, October 15 at 1:30 p.m. The Finley Falcon is expected to attend. There are several surprises planned, according to Principal John Amato. Team captains will speak briefly about each squad.
School Board Meeting
The next meeting of the Huntington School Board is scheduled for Monday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jack Abrams School auditorium. The public is invited to attend.
