Huntington School Board Notes
Huntington School Board members have approved probationary appointments for ESL teacher Debra Collins and foreign language teachers Gina Trigian-Molvaut and Jonathan Hernandez. Their respective probationary period runs to September 1, 2013.
Trustees also approved a part-time teaching appointment for Christine Gottlieb, who will work with students in the SEARCH program and granted a child care related leave of absence to Washington School classroom teacher Michelle Audia, effective November 15 through June 24, 2011.
Amanda Marino (art/Woodhull and Washington schools), Heather Spatafora (classroom/Washington School) and Wanda Gonzalez (ESL/Southdown School) were given long-term substitute teacher appointments. They will be filling in for teachers out on leaves of absence.
Washington School reading teacher Christina Droskoski was granted tenure, effective October 4. Changes in assignment were approved for food service workers Hatice Aydin, Gilda Suriano, Donna Servidio, Angela Amorison and Rita Aloe. Each of the employees will now work an additional 30 minutes per day.
Trustees also took the following actions:
- Approved minutes from the June 1 and August 30 meetings of the district's audit committee.
- Approved a contract change order in the amount of $2,500 related to an athletic field irrigation project at Washington Primary School. The original contract sum was $49,717.50. That has been reduced to $47,217.50. The project was carried out by Byrne 7 Son Irrigation, Inc.
- Approved contracts with the Daytop Preparatory School and Eden II/The Genesis Programs for educational services provided to school age students residing in the district.
- Approved budget transfers from one code to another to cover costs associated with after school support program including non-instructional salaries ($10,000), transportation ($25,000) and instructional salaries ($70,000).
- Approved budget transfers from one code to another to cover costs associated with registration for a conference ($150), guidance department mailings ($5,000) and dual language program textbooks ($1,300).
- Authorized the placement of numerous items of computer-related equipment, a Minolta microfilm reader and seven Janome sewing machines with tables and stools on the district's surplus bid list. "The equipment is obsolete," said David H. Grackin, assistant superintendent for finance and management services.
- Approved a RFP award for the audit and evaluation of telephone billing. Two vendors responded to a Request for Proposals with award being given to Auditel Telecommunications. "They will receive 30 percent of the amount of overcharges credited to or collected by the school district on a one-time basis," Mr. Grackin said.
- Authorized teachers Jon Hernandez, Ingrid Moreira, Sarah Hull, Kim Valerio and Natalee Rubecewich and Director of School Safety Jarrett Stein to receive mileage reimbursement for district related travel.
- Authorized the disposal of several hundred obsolete elementary grade level textbooks.
- Approved Phyllis Sadusky and Amy Hughes as faculty advisors for the J. Taylor Finley Middle School honor society.
- Approved bid awards for the printing of the Finley Middle School curriculum guide to A to Z Printing, Ltd. and for the printing of the Huntington High School curriculum guide to Tobay Printing Co.
- Appointed Sharon Holly (Finley Middle School), Bernadette Walsh (Huntington High School) and Paul Caleca (Huntington High School) as peer mediation coordinators in their respective buildings. Their stipends will be covered by a Title IV grant.
- Approved Regina Connors and Carol Dow to work as after school detention supervisors at Finley Middle School.
- Appointed Huntington High School teachers Monica Raca as the faculty advisor for the math honor society, Amanda Meyer as the Mathletes-9 advisor and Keith Mattis as the Mathletes 10-12 advisor.
- Appointed teacher Pam Piffard as an independent study advisor for Advanced Photo.
- Approved teachers Peri Alfano, Christina Bhasin, Gina Coleca, Silvia Gilbert, Jennifer Glatzer, Eileen Gonzalez, Susan Hahn-Graber, Sharon Holly, Luz Marotta, Robert Potter, Kristin Singer and Bernadette Walsh to work as mentors with new teachers. Their respective stipends will be funded through a Title IIA grant.
- Appointed Helen Guarino (English 11-12), Fred Bisogno (Global-10), Erik Bruckbauer (Global-9), Joseph Cohen (Living Environment), Craig McKee (Earth Science), Michael Graziano (Algebra), Jordan Gould (Participation in Government/Economics) as teachers in the alternative high school program. Donna Nugent and Anthony Troffa were authorized to work as substitute teachers in the program.
