Three Huntington Art Students among Long Island’s Best
The new school year is just starting but Huntington High School art students are already earning honors. Three teenagers are among a group numbering less than two dozen to be cited as Long Island’s top scholar-artists.
Bo-Ashley Brindley (media arts), Maya Horton (visual arts) and Clare Tonks (dance) were among just 20 students in Nassau and Suffolk to be recognized by the Long Island Arts Alliance’s scholar-artist program. Schools are limited to only one nomination in each of the five categories, making Huntington’s performance all the more noteworthy.
“This choice was based on the dedication you have shown to your craft, your completed application and artistic presentation, your grade point average and your outstanding letters of reference,” wrote Dr. John J. Gallagher, the chairperson of the selection committee, in a letter sent to each of the students informing them of the award.
Huntington students Colleen Tuebner (music) and Rebecca Silverman (theater) were recognized with Awards of Excellence in the program.
The scholar-artist program, which was established in 2007, is sponsored by the Long Island Arts Alliance and is underwritten by the Roslyn Savings Bank Foundation. Students are recognized in print and online by Newsday and at a reception for family, friends and teachers at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Long Island University - C.W. Post College.
Profiles and photos of the scholar-artists will appear in the pages of Newsday this fall. A selection committee composed of arts educators pored over applications this summer looking for signs of notable academic and artistic achievement. Dr. Gallagher noted it was a “difficult job” to choose the group of honorees.
“Congrats to our students and staff,” said Joan R. Fretz, Huntington’s director of fine and performing arts. “There are only 20 students chosen from the entire island in five categories. To have three from just one school is quite a feather in our art department cap.”
