Catching up with Kelsey Kunes

Kelsey Kunes has moved on from Huntington High School. She graduated last June, but by then had already laid the groundwork for her future. Knowing how organized and well-informed a teenager she is, no one is about to second-guess any of her decisions up to this point.

“I'm up at Boston College and so far I'm absolutely loving it,” Ms. Kunes said last week during an interview. “It was such an easy transition since I get along so well with everybody I have met so far. Everyone at the school is so friendly and helpful, which really makes it seem much smaller and more intimate even though it's a big school. Everyone also has a ton of school spirit so the football games have been amazing!”

Ms. Kunes built an enviable academic record at Huntington High School and received a Boston College acceptance letter last December – seven months before the commencement exercises.

A member of the English, Math, Foreign Language and National honor societies in high school, Ms. Kunes earned recognition as an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction. She participated in the high school club program and following years of horseback riding and lessons she reached the level of competitive equestrian. All of these experiences is being put to good use at Boston College.

“I'm in the Honors Program which has been very challenging so far but I think that it will be rewarding in the long run,” Ms. Kunes said. “I'm planning on double majoring in Economics and Hispanic Studies which will probably also be very time consuming, but I'm really enjoying the classes for my major so I'm looking forward to continuing with both.”

Does the Huntington alum have time for some extra-curricular activities? “I applied for several selective and competitive leadership programs and I also applied for a service trip to Honduras,” divulged Ms. Kunes. “I'm becoming involved in Circle K, College Democrats, BC Economics Association and the Student Admissions Program.”

As a Huntington senior, Ms. Kunes earned a Blue Devil Band Service Award and the Honorary Chief Robert Henneborn Award for Citizenship, which carried with it a $500 stipend. She graduated with many fond memories of her alma mater.

“BC has been such an amazing experience so far, though I do miss Huntington, the high school and all of my friends from home,” Ms. Kunes said.
