Retired English Teacher Passes Away

Al Vandelli, a retired Huntington School District English teacher has passed away at age 83. He worked at three different junior high schools during a career that spanned three decades. The tall, lanky educator had a deep voice and, in later years, a beard.

Mr. Vandelli, who was born on February 28, 1923, earned a BA degree at CUNY-Hunter College in 1956 and obtained a MS degree at St. John’s University in 1959. He engaged in additional graduate studies at Hofstra University and C.W. Post College.

Mr. Vandelli began working in Huntington on September 8, 1959 at Robert K. Toaz Junior High School. In September 1961, he was a member of the first faculty to staff Robert L. Simpson Junior High School, after that building reopened following a nearly three year renovation following 50 years of service as Huntington’s high school.

In September 1965, Mr. Vandelli moved over to the brand spanking new J. Taylor Finley Junior High School as an original faculty member, serving there until his retirement on June 30, 1991.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Mr. Vandelli served with pride for many years as the editor of a monthly newsletter published by the Associated Teacher’s of Huntington.
