Woodhull School Luau Celebrates Graduation

One of the year’s highlights came off without a hitch at Woodhull Intermediate School as 140 sixth graders celebrated their pending “graduation” with a luau in the gym.

It’s a traditional event that Woodhull students look forward to for the three years leading up to it.  This year’s 90 minute extravaganza saw professional DJ Richie Signorelli, who also works as a teacher aide at the school, playing popular songs that had students dancing and having a fun time.  They even did the limbo.  Many were dressed in Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts.

The event, which is now in its ninth year, was catered by Rookies Sports Bar.  The youngsters munched on egg rolls, pigs in a blanket, chicken fingers and fries.  There was also an assortment of home baked goods for dessert.

A hard-working committee helped organize the event and decorated the cafeteria and gym with pineapples, fruit and Hawaiian leis.  Woodhull art teacher Todd Hiscox and a group of students painted a huge wall mural that was used as a backdrop for pictures taken of the youngsters for the sixth grade yearbook.

The event was free and each of the students received a photo of them and friends, along with a Hawaiian lei.  “It was a lot of fun for everyone,” teacher Andrea Frisenda said.
