Huntington School Briefs

Chris Lau, valedictorian of Huntington High School’s Class of 2009, has been selected by the Dante Foundation of Nassau County to receive a $5,000 scholarship.  The prestigious award will be formally presented by the group at a dinner on July 1 at the Fox Hollow Restaurant in Woodbury.

Mr. Lau is headed to the University of Pennsylvania in the fall and plans to study finance in the world renowned Wharton School of Business.  This summer he is working at a Long Island law firm.

Funding of Reserves

At their June 8 meeting, Huntington School Board members approved a resolution to reserve “no more than” $2 million in the capital reserve fund and $1 million in the Workers Compensation fund at the close of the fiscal year next week.

David H. Grackin, assistant superintendent for finance and management services explained that the district’s independent auditing firm, Coughlin Foundotos Cullen and Danowski, issued a recommendation that trustees “pass a resolution describing how the unappropriated fund balance will be reserved on June 30, 2009.”

Trustees took the action after Mr. Grackin conducted a thorough review of anticipated expenditures and revenues.  “While this is an estimate at this time since the books have not been closed for June 30, 2009, the state comptroller also wants the board of education to reserve funds on or before the end of the fiscal year,” Mr. Grackin said.  “We will finalize these numbers once we set the tax rate in September 2009.”

Universal Pre-K

The Huntington School District has been allotted state funding for 156 students to participate in the Universal Pre-Kindergarten program next year.  The state allocates $2,700 per student.  The Huntington School Board authorized the Family Service League (136 students) and Developmental Disabilities Institute (20 students) to provide the services associated with the program.

Donations Accepted

Huntington School Board members accepted a donation of $364 from Island Softball League based in Moriches.  The slow-pitch league conducted a charity tournament in April at Huntington’s Mill Dam park to raise funds for autism programs.

The donation was made to the Huntington School District’s special education department. It will be used to benefit students.

Trustees also accepted an additional donation from Special Education PTA in the amount of $77.29.

3-on-3 Tournament

The 4th annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament was held at Huntington High School this month.  Teddy Calligeros, Anthony Brown and Matt Duffy won the overall championship for the fourth straight year, but they did sustain their first loss ever, as Stevens Merilan, Haquan Caleb, Shaquan Rains and Tyre Brown teamed up to snap the long undefeated streak.  But, the terrific trio did enough winning to capture another title.

Bids Awarded

Huntington School Board members awarded bid for in-car instruction for the Huntington driver education program to Twin County Driving School, Inc. in the amount of $295 per student.

A bid for administrative and instructional computer repair for the 2009/10 school year was awarded to NPA Computers, Inc. for an annual service contract fee of $54,398.64.

A bid for on-site computer support was awarded to eSchool Data, LLC for an hourly rate of $112.50.
