Beach Day Fun for Southdown Students
Southdown School students and staff trekked down the road to Gold Star Battalion Beach for a day on the sand and under the sun. Suffolk Police gave the group a special escort and the PTA pitched in to make it fun for everyone as the hours seemed to pass in a blink of the eye.
Beach Day is an annual Southdown tradition. The school is located a short walk from the harbor and sits mere steps from famed Coindre Hall. With rain a constant companion this month, Southdown was fortunate to pick one of June’s few sunny days for the big event. “The children were writing sunny day poems to assure a beautiful day, and it worked,” Principal Michelle Marino joked.
Guiding 360 students and dozens of staff members down the road to the beach is always a challenge. “That in itself was a learning experience,” Mrs. Marino said. But, once the group was there, the fun started within minutes.
The youngsters rotated through centers, playing volleyball, participating in relay races, building sand castles, dancing, rooting during a faculty volleyball game and water balloon toss, which generated plenty of class enthusiasm. The PTA supplied a filling and tasty lunch as students looked out on the glistening water and bobbing boats as they ate.
“It was a fun-filled day and although it was certainly that, it was also a great opportunity for problem-solving, cooperative learning, and of course a common experience to springboard writing, researching and of course, sharing back at Southdown,” Mrs. Marino said. “We wouldn't have changed a thing!”
