Huge Crowd at Dual Language Family Night

A huge crowd turned out to celebrate the Huntington School District’s dual language program at this year’s family night. More than 600 parents, students and family members from Jefferson, Southdown, Washington, Flower Hill, and Woodhull schools enjoyed the festive evening that included dance, music and bilingual cultural presentations by the children.

Families involved turned out en masse as students put on an entertaining show in the Huntington High School auditorium. Classes presented a variety of dances from Spanish-speaking countries, including salsa, merengue, bachata, flamenco and tango and several others.

To cap off the special night, the second graduating cohort of students, who are now in fifth grade, were recognized with fancy certificates for their participation and dedication to the program.

“The teachers and students put in so much hard work and preparation to create a memorable show,” said Carmen Kasper, director of foreign language, ESL and bilingual programs for the district. “As evidenced by the large attendance, the program continues to grow in its support.”

Superintendent John J. Finello, Southdown Principal Michelle Marino and Jefferson Principal Margaret H. Evers turned out for the celebration and mingled with parents and students. Program coordinator Glen Edwards helped organize the event.

Providing instruction for this year’s program were Jefferson School teachers Rosa Lanoue, Mariana Irigoyen, Wendy Gallo and Lucy Marotta, Southdown School teachers Frances Poy, Miriam Engle, David Crimi and Dimaris Ortega, Washington School teacher Yvonne Romeu-Shapiro, Flower Hill School teacher Erika Sabogal and Woodhull School teachers Vincenza Caruso, Soraya Triessl and Cinzia Reeves.

Huntington’s dual language program is comprised of English dominant and Spanish dominant children in the same classroom who are learning the New York State mandated curriculum in both English and Spanish, alternating languages each day. The program is in its seventh year of existence with students currently participating in five buildings.
