Blue Devil JV Baseball Turns Corner

After several down years, the Huntington junior varsity baseball team was much more competitive this spring, finishing its schedule with 5-9 record under first year coach Keith Barrett.

The 18-player team was led by sophomores Tyler Macca, Rich Fernandez, Matt Curley and Everett Kushner and junior Jesse Sheridan.

Macca (.429, 1 HR, 14 RBI) “is a very good hitter and a great team leader,” Barrett said about the third baseman/pitcher.  Fernandez (.375, 18 hits, 8 RBI) also shined as one of the team’s best hitters and was strong at catcher and first base.

Barrett said that Curley (.342, 17 runs) is the “team’s best all-around player.”  The shortstop/pitcher can hit, field and dazzle opponents on the mound.  Kushner (SS/CF) sparkled as a “very good” leadoff hitter who displayed “good speed.”  Sheridan showed good power at the plate and was fleet-footed in the outfield.

“This group was a great group of kids,” Barrett said.  “They were enthusiastic and eager to learn.  They never got down and thought they could win every time they played.”

The highlight of the season came when the Blue Devils topped Eastport-South Manor, 6-5.  ESM had been undefeated and finished the year with the best record in the league.
