Blue Devils Break 27-year old Relay Record
It wasn’t championship performance, but it was good enough to break a 27-year old school record. The Huntington boys’ track and field 4 x 100m relay team of Tyriek Johnson, David Acton, Jake Gayle and Josh Daves finished fourth at the Suffolk championships, circling the track at host Port Jefferson in 43.34 seconds.
We had a slight lead over the speedy field, but hand-offs weren’t that great,” Blue Devil head coach Ron Wilson said. “Middle Country, Sachem North, and North Babylon capitalized on our mistakes and passed us in the final turn. Although disappointed that we did not have a bid in the state finals, the boys were okay with their performance overall this year. I concur.”
Former longtime head coach Dennis Walker was in attendance at the meet, offering the Huntington athletes his congratulations on a success spring campaign. The blazing performance set a new electric FAT (fast automatic time) school mark in the event.
“So although defeated, but not broken, we went to Outback that same evening and celebrated our accomplishments this past season,” Wilson said. “We dined, laughed a bit, dined a bit more, and laughed a bit more as if we were never going to see each other again. It was a great evening with the boys!”
