Cornell Accepts Huntington Senior Alexandra Kimchy

It’s hard to define Alexandra Kimchy. She can be extremely serious and intense one minute and cracking jokes the next. She’s a legitimate scholar, but also someone who mixes it up with the best of them on the athletic field. She loves her hometown but will be leaving it soon as one of the happiest people around after being accepted into Cornell University.

Years of tackling tough courses and completing challenging assignments have paid off for the Huntington High School senior with admission to the Ivy League school she asked to make an early decision on her application

“I am very excited to attend there next fall and I plan to major in biology and take pre-veterinary courses,” Ms. Kimchy said. She’s currently enrolled in AP Micro-economics, AP Government & Politics, AP English Literature, AP Physics B, AP Calculus AB, Honors Spanish, Career Internship and Project Adventure II & III.

“Alex is a very intelligent young lady with great work ethic and motivation” said Deborah Beck, a Huntington High School biology teacher. “She excels in all her academic subjects as well as in sports. She is charismatic and caring. Alex was a pleasure to have as a student and I know she will continue to be successful at Cornell. I am pleased that she has decided to major in biology since she exhibited a natural talent in that subject, and the field of science can always use strong smart women like Alex.”

As she enters her final months at Huntington High School, Ms. Kimchy recently took time to reflect on her four years there. “I have had many great teachers and taken many interesting courses during my high school career,” she said. “Mr. [James] Graber is a wonderful teacher and I appreciate his dedication to history. I had him for AP U.S. History and currently have him for AP Micro-economics. My favorite courses are biology, physics and chemistry. As you can see, I like the sciences.”

Mr. Graber thinks just as highly of Ms. Kimchy as the senior does of him. “She is among the finest students I have ever had the pleasure of teaching,” he said. “She combines tenacity, talent and a sense of personal responsibility seamlessly. Most students feel lucky to get into their school of choice, but I firmly believe that Cornell is getting the better end of the bargain with Alex choosing to attend. Her future successes will reflect well on the district for years to come.”

Ms. Kimchy is a multi-dimensional young woman. She’s played varsity field hockey and lacrosse for the four years and has been a member of the prestigious Long Island Yello Jackets Elite lacrosse team and the Futures field hockey team.

This past fall she earned All-County field hockey honors. Last spring she was an honorable mention All-County player for the Blue Devil lax squad and was All-Division in field hockey.

“I am involved in Spanish, Math, Science and Art honor societies and the Key club,” Ms. Kimchy said. “I have an internship at Harborside Veterinary hospital, which I go to for an hour at a time, three days a week during the school day. I have already learned so much from the veterinarians, Dr. Frevola, Dr.Sponza, and Dr. Chen and have observed many surgeries such as spays and neuters. Surgeries are my favorite part!”

The internship program has proved to be especially valuable for the senior. “My wonderful experience so far has solidified my desire to become a veterinarian,” Ms. Kimchy said.

Ms. Kimchy’s elementary school teachers aren’t surprised by her success or by her acceptance into Cornell. They always saw her enormous potential and are proud of her achievements. Now she’s closing out her high school career on the highest of notes.

“I really love being a senior and plan on enjoying the rest my high school career,” she said. “I can’t wait to study at Cornell University!”
