Retired Huntington Librarian Passes Away

Jacquelyn A. Flad, a retired Huntington School District librarian, passed away on July 30. She was very active in her community and was the founding president of the Elwood Public Library.

“She was a tireless community supporter of getting a library in Elwood,” said Georganne White, herself a longtime Huntington librarian who presently works at Washington Primary School. The relatively new Elwood library is located in building that once housed a Blockbuster video store on the corner of Elwood Road and Jericho Turnpike.

Mrs. Flad attended Roy Wilkins Public School (P.S. 136) and graduated in 1947 from Andrew Jackson High School in Cambria Heights, Queens. She later obtained an A.A. from Suffolk Community College, a B.A. from SUNY Stony Brook (1972) and a M.S. from Long Island University – C.W. Post College (1973).

An East Northport resident, Mrs. Flad came to the Huntington School District on March 1, 1973 as a per diem English substitute teacher. On September 1, 1974 she assumed the position of librarian at Robert K. Toaz Junior High School and remained there until that building closed in 1982. She then moved to Flower Hill School as its librarian, serving there until her retirement in 1994.

She is survived by her husband, Albert, son Douglas, daughter Judith and their spouses and six grandchildren. She was interred at the Northport Rural Cemetery.
