Blue Devil Sports Briefs

The Huntington Booster Club will hold its second annual golf outing on Weds. Oct. 15 at Crab Meadow Golf Club.  The event will honor famous Blue Devil lacrosse player Hutch VanderSchuyt.  Sign-in, lunch and driving range practice will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. when the play will begin with a shotgun start.  Dinner and awards will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m.  For more information contact Mary Anne Hicks at 631-338-6976 or mbh501@aol.com.

The Huntington boys’ soccer team is in the midst of a productive first week of official practice.  The Blue Devils will be a young team after graduating 14 seniors from last year’s squad.  Nevertheless, Huntington definitely has its eyes on the playoffs.  Head coach John Pagano said the freshman/sophomore class “looks to be the strongest in some time.  We feel we are a year or two away from a big run” for the Suffolk title.

Stevens Merilan, Nick DiPaola and Lucas Santise are expected to anchor the team. Jesse Michaels Tom Curley, Marcelo Guardado, Chris Sandoval and Carlos Ramirez should be major contributors.

Huntington High School varsity boys’ and girls’ tennis coach Jamie Fishlow is raring to go after a summer packed with activities.  The vacation kicked-off with a morning tennis camp on the high school courts.  The week-long instructional program featured 28 youngsters ranging in age from first to eighth grade.

“We had the kids divided into two sessions and the student-to-instructor ratio per court was no more than 4:1,” Fishlow said.  “The kids got a lot of attention and hit a lot of balls in an hour and a half. (There were two separate 90-minute sessions each day.) We played modified games to reinforce their skills and everyone had a great time.  I am beginning to see a lot of returnees, so hopefully this will help us enhance the high school and Finley programs in the future.”

The Huntington High School boys’ basketball coaching staff is returning intact for the 2008/09 season.  The group includes head coach Michael Schmitz, assistant coach Tim Madden and junior varsity coach James Creighton.

The Blue Devil girls’ staff is also coming back, including head coach Brad Reminick, assistant coach Kim Betz and junior varsity coach Jennifer Rodgers.

The Huntington football team will participate in an interschool scrimmage on Saturday, August 30 at Cold Spring Harbor.  The Blue Devils will line-up against the host school along with Northport, Great Neck and Port Washington.

Huntington will host West Islip in a scrimmage on Tuesday, September 2 at 4 p.m. and finish up the pre-season with a scrimmage against Farmingdale and Longwood on Friday, September 5 at 4 p.m.  The Blue Devil JV will go to Walt Whitman High School that day for a three-way scrimmage that also involves Babylon.

The Huntington Booster Club is seeking a Varsity Dinner sponsor for its annual golf outing on Oct. 15 at Crab Meadow Golf Club.  The event will honor Blue Devil lacrosse great Hutch VanderSchuyt.  Sponsorship costs $3,500 and includes one foursome, premier signage and a tee sign.  Other sponsorships available include JV Cocktail Hour sponsor ($2,500), True Blue Devil lunch sponsor ($1,500), Blue Devil Alumni Award sponsor ($1,000), Finley Falcon cart sponsor ($750), Team Spirit refreshment sponsor ($500) and tee and green sponsors for $125 each.

For more information or to secure a sponsorship contact Mary Anne Hicks at 631-3386976 or mbh501@aol.com.
