Huntington Releases State Math Proficiency Exam Results
Huntington School District officials recently released the results of the 2008 state math proficiency exams. School officials have been sharing the results of Regents exams and state proficiency tests with School Board members and crafting plans to improve scores during the coming year.
At J. Taylor Finley Middle School, 86 percent of seventh graders and 84 percent of eighth graders scored on level three or level four to meet or surpass proficiency requirements.
“While the overwhelming percentage of our students are meeting or exceeding the state proficiency level for their grade, we still have work do in order to achieve our goal of having all students reach or surpass the proficiency standard,” Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello said. “Our faculty will work hard again with students this year and we will all do whatever it takes to raise our test scores.”
An improvement in proficiency rates was seen at Woodhull Intermediate School, where 83.1 percent of fourth graders, 83.7 percent of fifth graders and 84 percent of sixth graders met state standards. Each of the individual Woodhull grade level results were markedly higher than 2007, including a jump of 22 percentage points in year-to-year scores on the sixth grade level.
At Huntington Intermediate School (now Jack Abrams Intermediate School), 83.5 percent of fourth graders, 84 percent of fifth graders and 87 percent of sixth graders met or surpassed the state proficiency requirements as all three grade levels scored higher than last year.
Overall, scores at Flower Hill (90.6 percent), Washington (92.5 percent), Jefferson (95.7 percent) and Southdown (95.1 percent) primary schools were also higher in 2008.
“We will leave no stone unturned in our drive to improve student performance levels,” Mr. Finello said.
