Huntington Boys’ Soccer off to Best Start in Memory
The Huntington boys’ soccer team has established itself as a legitimate title threat in Suffolk this fall after a 6-0-1 start, the best in memory for the school. The Blue Devils are winning with a potent offense and physical defense, along with solid goaltending.
Huntington has already claimed wins over Comsewogue (2-0), Bayport (5-4), Westhampton Beach (1-0), Kings Park (2-1), Harborfields (6-1) and Rocky Point (5-0). The Blue Devils led Mount Sinai at halftime, 2-0, but had to settle for a 2-2 tie after surrounding a pair of second half goals.
Earlier this week, Huntington completely shut down Comsewogue as goalie Kyle Wasarhaley recorded six saves for the shutout. Jose Vasquez broke a scoreless tie about 25 minutes into the game when he scored off a rebound in front of the net. The Blue Devils gained breathing room in the second half when Herbert Reyes fed Nick DiPaula, who blasted a 25-yard rocket into the goal to give the home team its final two-goal margin of victory.
The six-goal outburst against neighboring rival Harborfields was impressive, too. Stevens Merilan notched a pair of goals and contributed an assist and Reyes, DiPaula, Cesar Guardado and David Krumholtz also found the net. Marcelo Guardado made five saves in goal. The Blue Devils’ well-balanced attack saw the squad score three times in each half.
Huntington’s shutout of Rocky Point was probably the team’s most stunning win of the year so far. Matt Scott scored twice and Vasquez, Alex Brown and Carlos Ramirez also tallied goals. Guardado was brilliant in the net, compiling his third shutout over six games.
