Long Island History Elective Available to Huntington Students
With Huntington sitting smack in the middle of a region steeped in history, it only makes sense that the Huntington High School Social Studies Department would offer students a chance to learn more about what makes Long Island unique.
Long Island History is a daily, one semester, half-credit elective course offered to Huntington juniors and seniors. “This course will focus on the history and development of Long Island from its geological formation to the present day, with a focus on the last 100 years,” according the high school course bulletin.
The course is one of eight social studies electives offered to Huntington High School students. The other seven include Criminal Justice, Holocaust & Historical Genocide, Honors/AP Research and Writing in Social Studies, Introduction to Philosophy, Psychology, Urban Studies: The New York Experience and Women’s Studies.
The goal of the Long Island History course “is to introduce students to the unique history of the place in which they live as well as the issues that will shape and effect its ongoing development,” states the course bulletin. “The history of Huntington will also be a component of this course.”
