Anna Wickey is rapidly gaining a reputation as one of Suffolk’s top field hockey players. The Huntington sophomore led the Blue Devils past visiting North Babylon this week, 5-0.
Wickey is a sensational athlete. She scored two goals and assisted on three others to pace Huntington. The teenager is one of several outstanding young players on the Blue Devil squad this fall.
Coached by Kathy Wright and Allison Conlon, Huntington is 2-2 through the opening four games. The young team is still trying to gain its footing, but the essential elements appear to be present for a strong squad for many years to come.
Huntington took a commanding 3-0 lead against North Babylon and put the game away with a pair of second half goals. Sophomore Megan Byrnes had two goals and senior Lianna DeChiaro also put a shot in the back of the cage. Sophomore Holly Wright picked up an assist. Freshman goalie Julie Rogel recorded six saves.
“I feel this was a great game for Huntington field hockey,” Wickey said. “The team really worked well today to beat North Babylon. The whole team played amazing today, especially our defense as they practiced getting the ball out of the circle and up to the offense. I personally think this was one of my better games.
Junior Morgan Minicozzi is another of Huntington’s key players and she has dazzled opponents with her moves on the field. Senior Lindsay McKenna has been sidelined, but she’s looking superb in practice and is due back on the game field shortly.
“We are a young team this year, but with lots of potential,” Wickey said. “I strongly believe we can make it to the playoffs this season.”

The Blue Devils opened the season with a 6-0 victory over visiting Copiague. Wickey and Wright each tallied two goals and one assist. Byrnes and DeChiaro notched one goal apiece. Rogel and junior Kaitlyn Sage stopped two shots each in the cage.
Huntington’s two losses came at the hands of powerful Riverhead (4-1) and Eastport-South Manor (6-0). It will take some time for the Blue Devil underclassmen to fully adapt to playing together on the varsity level, but when it all starts to click, the team should be something very special.
