The Huntington football team jumped ahead 14-7 last Saturday, but couldn’t hold on as Bay Shore rallied for 21 unanswered points in the final game of the regular season to topple the Blue Devils, 28-14 before a crowd of about 500.

A banged up Huntington was far from full strength, but the Blue Devils that were healthy enough to take the field gave the team everything they had.

The loss dropped Huntington to 5-3. The Blue Devils finished fifth in the Suffolk Division II standings. Big Blue will play a quarterfinal round playoff game at fourth place Half Hollow Hills East (7-1) on Saturday at 2 p.m. The teams didn’t meet during the regular season.

Senior Alex LaBella scored two touchdowns for Huntington at Bay Shore on passes thrown by John Paci IV and Luke Eidle. Placekicker Nat Amato converted both extra points. LaBella reached the end zone on a nine yard pass from Paci and again on a five yard dart thrown by Eidle. Running back Eric Sands led the Blue Devil ground attack.

Huntington head coach Steve Muller and assistant coaches Todd Jamison and Andrew White are busy prepping the team for this week’s game at Hills East. The staff is looking to maximize the effectiveness of the Blue Devil players that will be suiting up for Saturday’s playoff contest. The coaches are hoping that one or more of the players that have been sidelined will be able to play.

“We’ll be ready to go with anyone that’s able to play,” Muller said. “No football team can ever be completely dependent on any one player. You have to adapt week to week based on who is available. That’s the nature of the sport.”
