The J. Taylor Finley Middle School eighth grade boys’ soccer team defeated Candlewood last Friday to improve the Falcons’ record to 9-0.

Cecilio Alvarez, Ronaldo Alfaro, Ethan Evans, Jose Flores, Julio Martinez, Jack O’Brien, Luis Reyes and Michael Mesen all scored goals in Finley’s 9-1 victory. Candlewood also accidentally scored against itself.

Finley goalies Joe Rodriquez and Sean Hassett were once again splendid in the net. “They are verbal leaders and the core of our strong defense,” said Travis Smith, the Falcons head coach.

H-ton Lax Alums Meet on College Field

Two Huntington High School alums met on a college lacrosse field last Friday night. Hannah Burnett and Emma DeGennaro were both Blue Devil stars. They’re still stars, but Burnett now attends and plays for the University of Massachusetts Amherst and DeGennaro is studying at and playing for Brown University.

College lacrosse teams are allowed to play a small number of fall scrimmage games. Last Friday night at UMass, DeGennaro tallied six goals and two assists while Burnett scored five times. UMass won the scrimmage game, 12-10.

Once play had wrapped up, DeGennaro and Burnett exchanged greetings on the field for a few minutes before heading in opposite directions to join up with their college teammates.

Blue Devils Upset in Boys’ Soccer Playoffs

Seeded No. 4 in the Suffolk Class AA playoff bracket, the Huntington boys’ soccer team had high hopes. But Sachem East upset the Blue Devils on their home field. Regulation play ended with the score tied 1-1 and three overtimes couldn’t break the deadlock so penalty kicks decided the contest.

Luis Ortiz scored for Huntington in the first half. Nat Amato made eight saves in the net in his final high school game. The Blue Devils (12-3-2) enjoyed a glorious regular season, winning the program’s first outright league title in 28 years.

Huntington is coached by John Pagano and Jason Suarez.
