The Huntington varsity field hockey team honored three very special players on Senior Day at Blue Devil Stadium. Lianna DeChiaro, Lindsey McKenna and Sarah Agrillo were all recognized for their sensational contributions to the program during a touching pre-game ceremony.

Posters signed by each of the senior’s teammates were affixed to the façade of the bleachers. The underclassman formed parallel lines on the field and raised their sticks in tribute as the seniors and their parents passed underneath and walked out to midfield.

Huntington head coach Kathy Wright spoke about each of the seniors and what they have meant to the Blue Devil program as assistant coach Allison Conlon presented them with a gift bag and flowers.

“Throughout my years with this team I’ve learned what it means to show up and work hard, not because you have to, but because you want to do it for the team,” Agrillo said.

The three special teenagers were clearly touched by the love expressed by their coaches and teammates and each of them said that wearing Huntington’s uniform has meant an awful lot.

“Being part of this program is definitely one of the highlights of my high school career,” McKenna said. “We’re a very supportive team and are all close friends. I will remember this experience for years to come.”

While Huntington has fielded a very young team this season, the seniors have proved to be exceptional role models and Wright said the Blue Devils will benefit for many years to come.

“Being on Huntington’s field hockey team has been one of the highlights of my high school experience,” said DeChiaro, echoing McKenna’s sentiments. “I have made so many good friends and have learned from my coaches to always do my best regardless of the score.”

Once the ceremony had wrapped up, the Huntington and Newfield starting lineups were introduced to the crowd. Everyone then stood as Agrillo sang a stirring rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” over the stadium’s public address system. The performance was so good that even Blue Devil girls’ soccer players warming up for a game on an adjoining field clapped in unison when the teenager finished.
