Southdown School Honors September’s Stars

Southdown Principal Scott Oshrin with Splash Award honorees.

October 4, 2017

The first month of the new school year has unfolded smoothly at Southdown Primary School, where students quickly fell into sensational classroom routines. Principal Scott Oshrin and faculty and staff members recently honored some exceptional youngsters during a “splash” assembly in the gymnasium.

Southdown is the home of the dolphins, the school’s mascot. Students are awarded “splashes” for displaying positive behavior in the classroom and all around the building, including being kind to others, demonstrating proper behavior in hallways and even boosting the spirits of someone feeling a little down.

One Southdown student is selected from each class in the building for formal recognition at the monthly “splash” assembly. The school considers these youngsters to be its “stars of the month.”

The honorees included: Kindergarten: Katherine Gooch, Maxwell Dickson and Abner Velasquez Villeda; First grade: Calder Lyon, Charlie Mendreski and Matthew Donovan; Second grade: Quinn Ferhenbacher, Edwin Caballero Reyes, Steven Benitez, Jaime Uvena and Gabriella Jones; Third grade: Ricardo Berry, William Donaghy, Emily Redondo-Guillen and Carlos Jimenez-Contreras; Fourth grade: Javier Santiago Benitez, Alexandra Balm and Emma Polinsky.

The recent “splash” assembly focused on proper bus and indoor recess behavior. Teacher Pamela Schwarting led the discussion. Van 643 was honored during the session for demonstrating outstanding bus behavior.

Southdown teacher aide Peter Palacio was also recognized for his outstanding efforts on behalf of the building’s students. “Peter is a team player,” Mr. Oshrin said. “He translates documents, works to supervise lunch periods and helps staff members with a wide array of daily tasks to make their lives easier. He always does so with a smile. Peter is a tremendous asset to our school community.”
