Robbie Smith took over the field last Friday afternoon as the J. Taylor Finley Middle School eighth grade football team ran past host Centereach-Dawnwood, 43-6 to open the season on a high note.

Smith was unstoppable and so were his Finley teammates. Falcon coaches Ron Wilson and Jim Byrnes, Jr. liked what they saw on both sides of the ball.

On Finley’s second play from the line of scrimmage, Smith scooted 65 yards for the team’s first touchdown. The teenager then booted the ball through the uprights for an additional two points to give the Falcons an 8-0 lead. (A successful extra point kick on the middle school level is worth two points.)

Holding a scoreboard advantage, Finley’s defense went to work, smothering Dawnwood and forcing their foe to surrender the ball on downs at the 50 yard line. On the very next play, Smith darted through the line again and broke into open field, outrunning the secondary for his second touchdown of the afternoon.

The teams lined up for another point after kick, but this time the snap was on the ground, so Smith picked it up and bull-rushed his way into the end zone for the extra point to put Finley ahead 15-0.

Many Finley players enjoyed starring roles in the game. Josiah Melendez shook off a misplay that saw a pitchout go right through his hands and later scored touchdowns covering 27 and 28 yards, respectively.

Jahiem Hawkins would also find the end zone in third quarter for still another Finley touchdown. “He was also a force on defense along with John Marziliano, who shut down Dawnwood’s offense for the A-team,” Wilson said.

The Falcons would score still one more time. On a fourth down and 26 yards to go play, Harrison Krywalk found slot receiver John Chirico open in the middle of the field on a fade route and fired a pass to him that went for the final touchdown on the day.

Finley-8 has upcoming games scheduled with East Northport and West Hollow.
