Southdown Primary School students produced dozens of impressive projects for this year’s science fair. The work was displayed last week in the school gym. A large crowd turned out to look all of it over.

Fourth grader Sam Soric won the overall award for the top project. He will now advance to the Brookhaven National Lab’s annual Suffolk elementary science fair on Saturday, May 6.

Over 100 schools typically participate in the county fair. Some 470 projects created by over 500 Suffolk students ranging from kindergarten through sixth grade were entered last year. Projects usually include charts, experiments, demos, diagrams, and collections with a scientific objective. BNL scientists and county elementary school teachers serve as contest judges.

The Southdown fair included projects by every fourth grader in the school. Each class of students from kindergarten through third grade also produced a group project that was presented to others on the respective grade level. Some “underclassmen” also decided to develop and submit individual projects.

Teachers and parents guided students throughout the creation of their respective projects. Once the projects had been completed, Jill Johanson, the district’s elementary grade level STEM chairperson met with each of the fourth graders to critique their work. She also served as the contest’s judge.

“So many high quality projects were submitted that it was a very difficult task for the judges to select just a handful for awards,” Southdown Principal Scott Oshrin said. “We commend every student in the school for participating in this year’s fair, whether individually or through their class. Our youngsters love science and the fair was a fun way to further everyone’s knowledge”
