As the 2016/17 school year passes the halfway mark and enters the spring semester, the Jefferson Primary School community has little time to pause and catch its collective breath. There’s simply too much to do.

Jefferson students, teachers and paraprofessional staff members are going about their business with a sense of purpose that few can hope to match. The more than 330 youngsters that are studying in the building are working hard and enjoying every last bit of recognition that happens to come their way.

Principal Valerie Capitulo-Saide and Jefferson’s faculty recently announced the recipients of January’s Citizens of the Month Awards. Members of the talented and high-achieving group were given certificates and then assembled for a photo.

Award recipients include Josue Aguilar Chavez, Logan Apelsinov, Isabella Cruz, Violetta Fox, Madison Haas, Angelina Hernandez, Amaya Joly, Daniel Kasindorf, Shane Le Grow, Karen Lopez Del Cid, Marwan Muslim, Anthony Naborre, Delaney O’Brien, Gricelle Rojas, Charlie Stanforth, Jocelyn Thorbourne and Jonathan Veliz Balcarcel.

Kindergarteners Celebrate at Publishing Party

Kindergarteners in teacher Emily Bifulco’s class celebrated their hard work during a publishing party in the classroom. “The students have been writing, editing and revising their writing pieces to create published narratives,” Principal Valerie Capitulo-Saide said. “The kindergarteners especially enjoyed having our fourth graders visit, read a story and offer compliments.”

February’s Featured Artists at Jefferson

Jefferson Primary School recently recognized its Featured Artists of the Month for February. The youngsters were selected by art teacher Maria Mazzola to have one of their pieces displayed in the building’s main hallway.

The honorees include Ali Brady, Bladimir Cordova Parada, Justin D’Eloia, Noah Garcia, Josue Gamez, Olivia Guerrero, Ruby Hoffman, Imre Hollisi, Samantha Jandres Benitez, Yarel Lopez Cruz, Atiana Joly, Aniston Mata Gomez, Alexander Prudente, Andrew Ramirez, Alexa Schirripa, Audrey Sherwood and Sebastien Simon.

National Wear Red Day

Jefferson teachers and paraprofessionals embraced National Wear Red Day to raise awareness in the fight against heart disease and stroke. The group also raised tidy sum, which will be donated to the American Heart Association.

Jefferson School has a long tradition of supporting National Wear Red Day, which aims to reduce heart disease and related deaths among women. More than 500,000 women are annually felled by heart disease in the United States.

National Wear Red Day is observed across the country on the first Friday of February. It was created by the American Heart Association 14 years ago.
