Ryan Mock and Ryan Stieve won weight class titles to pace the Huntington wrestling team to a fourth place finish in the Suffolk League IV tournament last Saturday.

Mock (113 lbs.) and Stieve (192 lbs.) both captured exciting bouts in the finals. Nine Blue Devil wrestlers had earlier advanced to the semifinal round of the seven team tournament and qualified for next weekend’s county championships.

Five Huntington grapplers reached the finals. Sean Flick (99 lbs.), Charlie Gadson (220 lbs.) and Khari McNeil (285 lbs.) all fell in their respective championship round bout, with Flick and Gadson dropping one-point decisions. McNeil was pinned in overtime.

Tazedon Smith (220 lbs.) took third place and Aedan McDonald (106 lbs.), Charlie O’Rourke (113 lbs.) and Robert Simon (182 lbs.) all finished fourth.

Flick reached the finals after earlier capturing a 16-0 technical fall in 2:45 and then pinning Deer Park’s Joe Burns in the semifinals in 3:28. The Huntington freshman dropped a 4-3 decision in the finals to West Islip’s Jason Lella.

Mock pinned a pair of foes in the tournament, including West Islip’s Billy Nicholsen in the finals in 3:34.

Stieve pinned his quarterfinal round opponent in a swift 0:33 and then won a 4-3 overtime decision in the semifinals, which set up an epic championship round bout. The Huntington senior prevailed in the ultimate tie-breaker when he round out No. 1 seeded Audwin Philip of North Babylon for the final 30 seconds of the match.

Gadson pinned his semifinal round foe in 4:14 before falling 5-4 to top seeded Ben Greene of Bellport in the finals. McNeil pinned Deer Park’s Amani Harrilal in the semifinals in 0:46 before losing to No. 1 seeded Brandon Bennett of West Babylon, 5-4.

“It was a solid effort,” Huntington head coach Travis T. Smith said. “We lost some tough matches that could have gone the other way. But, we are happy to have nine wrestlers going to the county tournament next weekend.”

The Blue Devils compiled 129.5 points in the competition, trailing North Babylon (195), Half Hollow Hills West (169.5) and Bellport (158), but ahead of West Islip (124), Deer Park (102) and West Babylon (43.5).
