Several Huntington wrestlers are expected to be in the mix for individual weight class titles at Saturday’s Suffolk League IV tournament at Half Hollow Hills West in Dix Hills.
A seeding meeting held Thursday stretched long into the night as coaches sorted out the top grapplers in each of the 15 weight classes and created brackets. The action kicks off Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The semifinals are set for 2 p.m. with consolation matches for third place scheduled for 4:30 p.m. The finals will be wrestled on one mat beginning at 6 p.m. Admission is $6.
Huntington is led by county ranked senior Ryan Mock, who brings a 30-4 mark into the tournament. Sean Flick (27-7), Aedan McDonald (11-12), Robert Simon (16-14), Ryan Stieve (13-9), Aidan McCooey (16-14), Charlie Gadson (21-9) and Khari McNeil (27-5) are all expected to vie for honors. The Blue Devils are also hoping some of their underclassmen manage to pull off a few upsets.
The top four wrestlers in each weight class will qualify for next weekend’s Section XI championships at Suffolk-West in Brentwood. “Our goal is always the same; to win as many titles as we can and to qualify as many wrestlers as possible for the county tournament,” Huntington head coach Travis T. Smith said.
