Before they headed off into the proverbial sunset, three exceptional Huntington High School girls’ basketball players were recognized for the sensational contributions they have made over the years to the Blue Devil hardcourt program.
Anna Gulizio was named Huntington’s MVP. Emma Petrizzi captured the Most Improved Award and Tara Wilson garnered the Coaches Award. All three players were vital to the team’s success throughout their high school careers.
Gulizio is headed to Syracuse University where she plans to study for a career as a social worker. Petrizzi will be attending the University of Massachusetts Amherst where she is interested in pursuing a degree in nutrition. Wilson is headed to SUNY Geneseo where she plans to study history and prepare for a career as a social studies teacher.
A four year Blue Devil varsity player, Gulizio was named to Suffolk’s All-League, All-Conference and All-County teams as a senior. “Anna is a great leader and brought a great sense of humor to our team,” head coach Michael Kaplan said. “She’s an all-around outstanding athlete and basketball player.”
Petrizzi played three years on the Huntington varsity. She was All-League, All-Conference and Academic All-County as a senior. “Emma is an outstanding shooter and work hard day in and day out to improve all aspects of her game,” Kaplan said. “She has outstanding leadership skills.”
Well known throughout Suffolk as a defensive specialist, Wilson earned Academic All-County honors last season. She made an indelible mark during her two seasons on the Blue Devil varsity. “Tara has spent countless hours improving her skills during the offseason,” Kaplan said. “She went above and beyond for her team and did whatever was asked of her.”
The three players were recognized during the 49th annual Blue Devil senior athletic awards banquet in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.
