Katelin Hanke is fascinated by the night sky and all the celestial bodies that it contains. The Huntington High School senior has a wonderful imagination to go with her sensational ability to conceive and execute simply gorgeous photos.
Ms. Hanke’s photography has drawn many admirers and she’s really just gathering momentum. She seems destined to be one of the top young photographers on Long Island. Her work will be entered into several upcoming competitive shows and it’s sure to win rave reviews.

As she prepares to conclude her time at Huntington High School and transition to a new phase as a college freshman, Ms. Hanke is confident that photography will always hold a special place in her life.

Questions and Answers with Katelin Hanke
Q: How old are you and what grade are you in?
Katelin Hanke: “I’m 17 and I’m in 12th grade.”
Q: How did you first get interested in photography?
Katelin Hanke: “I’ve always been around photography since my aunt, uncle and some family friends are photographers. My brother took intro and advanced photography and he enjoyed it so I figured I would too.”
Q: Where do you get your ideas?
Katelin Hanke: “I get the majority of my ideas from looking at other artists’ work and seeing what inspires me. I also look at various social media sites such as Pinterest, Tumblr and Instagram.”
Q: Is there any specific type of photography you like best?
Katelin Hanke: “I’m really drawn to portrait photography because I’ve always been a fan of people watching. There’s so many things that a photo of someone can tell you about them.”
Q: How has the Huntington photography program helped you with your love of photography?
Katelin Hanke: “Before I came into this program I knew nothing about photography. Ms. Piffard and the Huntington photography program has given me the knowledge and materials I need to take the best photos possible.”
Q: What has your experience with taking AP 2D been like?
Katelin Hanke: “My experience with APv2D has been great! I’ve taken Intro to Photo and Advanced Photo for the past two years and AP has challenged me to creatively think outside the box. It’s also really great to see what everyone around me is doing and that they’re ready to give and receive feedback on our pieces.”
Q: Tell us about the idea behind your AP concentration?
Katelin Hanke: “My AP concentration is the investigation of the connection of people and celestial worlds. I’ve always been fascinated with the night sky and what’s in it. People have always told me that I have a habit of staring into space and I feel that my concentration really captures that idea.”
Q: What are your plans for next year?
Katelin Hanke: “Next year I plan on going to college with a major revolving around computers. I plan to keep doing photography as a hobby or as a side business.”
