The Huntington High School girls’ volleyball team won back-to-back matches last week. No one can remember the last time that happened. A long period of rebuilding is nearing its completion as the Blue Devils have turned the corner and become much more competitive.

The victories over Babylon and West Babylon give Huntington three wins so far this fall. That’s three more than all of last year. Second year head coach Lauren Visbal is determined to develop a consistently successful girls’ volleyball program and she’s been working with players on every level to teach and motivate them.

The Blue Devils topped Babylon in an exciting five game match winning the first game 25-13 before dropping the second and third games, 17-25 and 18-25. Huntington then rallied to capture games four and five by scores of 27-25 and 25-14.

Catherine Jamison (17), Madelyn Reed (7) and Alexandra Heuwetter (4) led the Blue Devils in “kills” against Babylon. (A “kill” is defined as an offensive attack leading directly to a point being scored.) Julia Rogan notched 10 serving aces. Lindsay Saginaw tallied 37 assists.

Huntington won three straight games against West Babylon last Friday, 25-11, 25-22 and 25-22. Jamison once again paced the Blue Devils with 13 “kills” while Rebecca Caballero added seven. Reed and Heuwetter had four “kills” each. Rogan has two “kills” and two aces. Saginaw contributed 28 assists. Heuwetter also had four blocks in the match.

“I think the fact that our team is starting to really work well and communicate with each other on the court is a major reason for our victories,” Rogan said. “Everyone’s skills have improved so much and we are all so motivated to win and do the best we can do. Coming from last year’s season of having a record of 0-12, these wins have definitely boosted our morale and I think Huntington’s volleyball program has a really bright future ahead.”

Visbal counts on contributions from her entire roster so every player needs to work hard and be ready when called upon. Jaime Ioppolo, Caroline Lenze, Deanna Morales and Rachel Moss round out Huntington’s roster.
